Develop celebratory opportunities to build footfall in Purley!

We love Purley and we know you do too! With the ever-changing world we need to promote Purley as a destination.

We need to make Purley stand out, offer more and be different. Which is why we need a BID to keep working on areas that need improving and celebrate the areas we excel at.

Whether for the family, workers, residents or the night-time economy, let’s ensure Purley is a great destination.

We need to make sure that the town is family friendly. Research shows that district centres that are good for the family increase footfall and dwell time; the two key factors that impact the economy of the area.

With a struggling global economy, we must ensure that Purley continues to look pleasant and is also attractive for new businesses to set up here. Research consistently shows that those who invest in promotion during a downturn significantly outperform those who don’t.

Here’s a brief summary of just some of the projects that the Purley BID team has delivered in the last 5 years:

  • Established the Purley Food and Drink Festival
  • Run the Live Well event in Purley
  • Improved seasonal marketing of the area with banners, flower baskets, improved Christmas Lights, seasonal festive lighting, art work to encourage a year-round  pleasant atmosphere for shoppers, clients, diners and pub-goers
  • Developed annual art projects for the area
  • Built a growing following on Social Media facilities to inform about Purley shops, events, offers and attractions
  • Regularly publish a Town Traders newsletter as a source of information for businesses about our BID activity
  • Improved cosmetic appeal of empty shops to get better appeal of the streets in general
  • Marketing harder and smarter is a key role of the BID team and the businesses working together – no single business can achieve this but through organised and collaborative activity we can.
  • Annual Easter egg hunt
  • The best dressed Christmas window competition
  • Winter & Christmas lights, testing, maintenance, insurance and agreements
  • Providing training and working towards Purley becoming a Dementia Friendly town

What you benefit from with the Purley BID & some of our future plans

  • Purley BID patrol the town daily, reporting and removing graffiti and fly-tipping. The BID has ensured the removal of hundreds of pieces of graffiti and waste, as well as reporting damaged or missing street furniture (such as chairs, railings and road signs).
  • To deal with the rodent infestation causing problems at Purley Cross, Purley BID arranged for the foliage to be cut and kept back.
As well as organising numerous litter picks, the BID team has also input on the arrangement of street bins at optimum sites.
  • Provision of free cleaning annually to all businesses for their shop signages.
  • The BID also provides additional deep cleaning where the results are worthwhile.
  • For future initiatives, Purley BID is looking at ways to reduce issues caused by the pigeon population.
  • Reinstating the Flood Defence Committee to help manage flash flooding that Purley is susceptible to.
  • Procurement of the iconic Purley fountain back into working order.
  • Purley in Bloom is a new project that the BID plans to run, partnering with Network Rail, South East and Southern Rail, to deliver a greener and brighter town. Current plans are for new flowers to be placed in the islands within Purley Cross, as well as creating wild garden areas on the Godstone Road embankment to brighten it up and reduce littering.
