Friday, 25th July 2025, marked a remarkable milestone in Purley’s history—the 100th anniversary of the Purley Rotary Field being officially handed over by the Purley Rotary Club to Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council for the benefit of the public.
What began in 1925 as a generous act of civic vision has grown into one of Purley’s most cherished green spaces. The Rotary Club’s gift was more than just land—it was a promise. A promise that this field would remain a permanent public space, open to all, a place for play, peace, and community.
But the story of this land stretches even further back. In the early 1800s, it formed part of the route of the Surrey Iron Railway—the world’s first public railway line. This pioneering infrastructure project laid the groundwork, quite literally, for the community connections we enjoy today. Remnants of this railway still echo through the field’s heritage, commemorated in local art and installations.
Over the decades, Purley Rotary Field has evolved into a vibrant hub of local life. From children’s games and family picnics to community festivals and floral displays, it has become a space where memories are made and traditions are nurtured. Thanks to the efforts of Purley BID, Croydon Council, and countless volunteers, the field has blossomed—both literally and figuratively.
Simon Cripps, CEO of Purley BID: “Purley Rotary Field is more than just green space—it’s the heart of our community. Through initiatives like Purley in Bloom and the support of local volunteers, we’ve worked hard to honour its heritage while making it vibrant and welcoming for today’s residents. This centenary is a celebration of what we can achieve when we come together.”
Recent years have seen the field enhanced through the Purley in Bloom initiative, with colourful planting schemes, a mural by local artist Chris Shea celebrating the area’s railway past, and the installation of a concrete table tennis table to encourage active use. These additions reflect the community’s ongoing commitment to keeping the field not just beautiful, but meaningful. Purley in Bloom has planted a “100” on the bank at the top of the field to commemorate this milestone.
To honour this centenary, Purley BID hosted a small ceremony attended by the Mayor of Croydon, local councillors, Rotary members, and residents. It was a moment to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future of this treasured space.
Mayor Jason Perry, Mayor of Croydon: “The Purley Rotary Field is a shining example of how a community’s foresight can shape generations. For 100 years, this space has offered joy, tranquillity, and togetherness to the people of Purley. As Mayor, I’m proud to celebrate this centenary and the enduring legacy of civic generosity it represents.”
Councillor Simon Brew, Croydon Council: “The Purley Rotary Field is a testament to what can be achieved when civic vision meets community spirit. As a councillor, I’m proud to support spaces like this that bring people together and honour our shared heritage. Here’s to the next hundred years of community, care, and connection.”
Tony Farrell, Local Resident: “I’ve lived in Purley for over 40 years, and the Rotary Field has always been a part of our family’s life—from football with the kids to quiet walks in the evening. It’s more than just a park; it’s a place where the community comes together. Seeing it reach 100 years is truly special.”
