Purley enters Britain in Bloom: A Blossoming Success

Purley in Bloom has been honoured with an invitation to participate in the exclusive “Britain in Bloom” competition, making Purley one of only three Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in the country to receive this accolade. This invitation is a testament not only to Purley but to the entire borough.

Now in its third year, Purley in Bloom has achieved remarkable success in the London in Bloom Competition. After receiving the Silver Gilt award in the first two years, Purley in Bloom won the prestigious Gold award last year. The Executive Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry, praised the initiative, saying, “Purley in Bloom’s achievements are a shining example of community spirit and dedication. Their hard work has transformed Purley into a vibrant and welcoming place, and I am thrilled to see them recognised on a national level.”

The Purley in Bloom team, who meet every Saturday to enhance the town, have made significant improvements over the past year. Their efforts include creating a meditation garden at the Purley Memorial Hospital, planting new greenery throughout Purley Cross, establishing a new garden by “My Old China,” and organising special workshops for the town’s children. The team’s tireless work has been appreciated by all who visit, and their contributions have added numerous planters, tree lights, artwork, a nature trail, a bug hotel, a table tennis table, and more. Beyond aesthetics, Purley in Bloom has brought numerous benefits, including improved physical and mental health, strengthened friendships, reduced crime, and increased pride in the local area.

Simon Cripps, CEO of Purley BID, expressed his excitement, stating, “The invitation to the Britain in Bloom competition is a tremendous honour for Purley. It reflects the incredible efforts of the Purley in Bloom team and the strong partnerships we’ve built. We are excited to continue making a positive impact on our community.”

Purley in Bloom has formed numerous partnerships to achieve these results, including collaborations with Croydon Council, TFL, Network Rail, Southern Water, local businesses, and many more. The team welcomes new members to join and build on this success.

Carol Terriere, Purley in Bloom Coordinator, added, “Our team’s dedication and passion have brought about significant improvements to Purley. We are proud of what we’ve achieved and look forward to representing our town in the Britain in Bloom competition.”

Judging for the London in Bloom competition will take place in late June and Britain in Bloom judging will be in August, with the results being notified by the end of the year.
