Purley water fountain restored

Purley Business Improvement District (BID) is proud to announce the completion of their restoration project for the water fountain located at the Grade II listed Purley library.

Restored back to its former glory and now in full working order, the fountain has been a Purley landmark for well over 100 years.

The Purley BID team commenced initial discussions to restore the fountain with the London Borough of Croydon in Summer 2019. Careful consideration had to be given due to the Grade II listed status of the library building.

We appointed contractors Clearwater Ponds & Landscaping (pictured below) to undertake the full restoration alongside Delta Power, which handled the electrical supply.

Our engagement manager at Purley BID, Catherine Garrad, said: “We are delighted to restore the water fountain, it’s a fantastic piece of Purley heritage. It’s wonderful to have it back in working order. Thanks to the dedication of the team we worked with in making the dreams of restoring this historic monument become reality.”

The marble water fountain was commissioned in 1904 to celebrate the reign of Queen Victoria. Originally situated at Purley Cross, as improvements to the town’s roadway took place the water fountain was relocated, not once, but twice. In 1983, the Purley Rotary Club relocated and restored the monument to its current site in the library gardens.

Watch this space as we will announce details of an official event to mark the launch of the restored Purley Water Fountain once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
