A competition to find a sculptor to commemorate the Surrey Iron Railway

A proposal has been put forward to have a sculpture in Purley to commemorate the Surrey iron Railway (1805-1837). It ran through Purley’s Rotary Field and was one of the world’s first rail ways, with wagons drawn by horses! You can still see a section of the rail way towards the top corner of the field.

Croydon Council has launched a competition to find a sculptor/tress for this project, with a closing date for initial applications of 30 November.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in entering, please contact Councillor Simon Brew (Simon.Brew@croydon.gov.uk) who will forward details to the organiser, who is Purley’s Regeneration Manager, Diana Phiri-Whitty.
