Purley BID business rates victory benefits Purley businesses and the whole country!
The Purley Business Improvement District team has won a massive victory for the small business retailers in Purley and across the whole country by lobbying the chancellor of the exchequer to reduce Small business rates and in the Autumn budget achieve a third reduction in the Business rates. The Purley BID team highlited how unfair the recent business rates revaluation has impacted Purley In Particular where they have seen an average increase of 49% increase.
The campaign by Purley BID, first of all started with posters in shop windows as well as appearing on national radio. It then held a street protest that drew support from politicians on both side of the political spectrum. This was then championed by local MP for Croydon South, Chris Philp, who took the challenge Purley faced direct to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philp Hammond.
Chris Philp’s tenacious lobbying on behalf of the Purley BID was acknowledged specifically by the Chancellor during the Autumn budget, where the chancellor has now implemented a reduction by a third to retail business rates for businesses whose rates are less than £51k.
Simon Cripps, CEO for the Purley BID said: “This is an incredible victory for the small business, up against so many challenges in this harsh and changing business climate. To get this result after so much hard work had been put in is phenomenal for the small retailer, and we are delighted to have come up trumps.”
Chris Phill MP said: “It was the Purley BID campaign that raised the issue which led me to push the chancellor over the past year for the business rates change.”
